Young adulthood is a time of extraordinary growth. It is a moment when one's abilites are tested and when old identies are being left behind and new ones taking hold. Therefore it is not unusual to experience moments of anxiety or depression or feel overcome by a sense of lostness. These feelings ought not to be supressed. Rather, they ought to be addressed and explored in the presence of a professional trained to help you in your journey. To that end ECNYU has joined with a local psychotherapist at the Psychotherapy and Spirituality Institute (PSI) and NYU faculty member, Therese Regan, who will meet with you for a free consultation to discuss what options for mental and spiritual care are available both on campus and in the wider community. If you have questions or concerns about your emotional state or about the process of psychotherapy please don't hesistate to contact the Chaplain or Dr. Ragen (by phone below). The Following is a statement from Dr. Ragen: Finding a psychotherapist can be a daunting task, especially if one is away from home and in the midst of a stressful or painful time. I am interested in making the referral process for students needing psychotherapy as simple and comfortable as possible and referring students to a therapist who will be a good match for them and their individual needs. I am on the staff of the Psychotherapy and Spirituality Institute (PSI), which has offices in the Village as well as other locations in the city. Working with a therapist from the PSI may be of particular interest to students who want to address the underlying connection between their spiritual, emotional, and physical well being in the psychotherapy process. PSI psychotherapists have professional training and certification in both psychology and spirituality. A second resource I will be using to make good, solid referrals for students is the pool of graduates and candidates of the NYU postdoctoral program in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. All of these therapists are already fully trained clinical psychologists or psychiatrists who have received or, in the case of candidates, are presently receiving additional postdoctoral training in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy at NYU. When a student comes to me the student and I will have an initial meeting aimed at identifying the best referral for that person and I will continue to work with the student until they find a therapist with whom they feel both comfortable and hopeful. Students can make an appointment with me by calling my office at 212 529-9442. |
